Event Agenda
1-2:30 p.m. DIAL Updates & Commonly Cited Deficiencies.
Join the Nursing Home Unit of the Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) as they review commonly cited deficiencies and notable patterns during on-site survey activity. Additionally, DIAL leadership will present the most recent updates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the QSO-25-14-NH memo, which includes significant revisions to the interpretative guidance within Appendix PP. Lastly, DIAL will discuss how CMS measures their performance including key performance indicators they are expected to meet to receive Federal funding.

2:30 – 2:45 Break

2:45 – 3:45 p.m. A Multidisciplinary Approach to Ensuring Accurate Diet Textures. A growing trend identified during on-site nursing home surveys includes residents receiving the inappropriate diet texture. Receiving the incorrect diet texture has the potential to result in significant adverse events including aspiration, choking, and even death. A multidisciplinary panel including a dietitian, speech therapist, dietary manager, and director of nursing will review strategies to ensure residents receive the correct diet texture and consistency to prevent any negative outcomes.

3:45 – 4 p.m. Break

4 p.m. – 5 p.m. The Cost of a Deficiency: Its More than a Monetary Penalty. Every deficiency has the potential to incur enforcement action by the State Survey Agency and CMS. However, the actual cost of a deficiency is so much more than a monetary penalty. Deficiencies often entail legal costs and increased employee administrative tasks. Deficiencies possibly impact employee retention, nurse aide training, occupancy, reimbursement, public image, general litigation risks and impacts on nursing home transactions. During this session, experienced legal counsel discuss the actual impact of deficiencies on nursing home providers and how proactive approaches to quality can prevent negative impacts.
